Havanna

San Cristóbal de La Habana (Havanna) – The capital city of the island
Unfortunately the times of flying high belong to the past for Havanna, but there are many things to see and do apart from the Salsa and Cigars. Many famous Hollywood stars used to amuse themsleves here such as Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Errol Flynn, as well as members of the Mafia such as Al Capone and Meier Lansky.
The locals call Havanna «The old, Carabean Lady». You will encounter people singing or dancing on every corner. There are many problems in this region of the world: the magnificent, historical buildings in the quarter of Habana are beginning to fall apart and the renovation program for this over 500 year old Jahre part of the city is continuing very slowly. The financial means to progress faster are simply not available. People that are very familiar with the island see this as a result of the socialism from the times of Fidel Castro, almost 50 years after the revolution, Kuba's economy is still in a coma.
Even though the original glamour of the city has faded a little, the charm has remained. Strolling around the center of the city, or enjoying the ride in a US-Oldtimer: Havanna is a must to see. The past comes alive as you explore the streets. The Capitolo Nacional, a republic of the Washington capital, glows in full glory in the midday sun. The historical Cathedral of Havanna is also well worth a visit. The remains of Columbus are laying in the grave of the Cathedral according to the locals - and not in Santo Domingo or Sevilla. Don't miss a visit to the immense El Morro, where you can witness the historical ritual of the Canon being fired at 9pm daily. Afterwards it is a must to attend the world famous dance cabaret «Tropicana», or to go the Bodeguita del Medio for a drink, where Hemingway was said to have savoured his Mojito.
