Faro

Faro is situated in the most southern province of Portugal and has a population of approx. 50 000 inhabitants. The city is the administrative center of the Algarve region and was probably founded by the Phöniziern. The Greeks, Romans, Sueben and Westgoten all reigned the city at one stage until it was in the hands of the Arabs between 713 and 1249. Their presence can still be felt today in many places, and it can be seen in the names of many of the villages in the region.
In the old city the Cathedral from the 13th century and the church «Nossa Senhora do Carmo»from the 18th century are well worth seeing. You will come across many more on your travels in Portugal!
The beach populated by the locals in the high season is that of the 'Praia da Ilha do Faro'. The 'Praia da Barreta' is a ferry ride away on a beautiful island. The 'Ria Formosa' is under protection and is also well worth a visit if you are a nature freak.

You will find more than 150 festivals, markets, celebrations and processions in the Portugese calender. Apart from the religious celebrations and the carneval in February, the following festivals have a special meaning in Faro:
Middle of October: Feira de Santa Iría. This masse with a market goes back over 400 years. For the small visitors there are carussells and other attractions, and for adults there is no shortage of things to see and do. Authorities, groups and various organisations from the region generally have a stand on display here. Because the exhibition is aimed at the locals, you won't find many tourists here.
