Dublin

Dublin is a lively and charming city and has approx. 500'000 inhabitants. It is the biggest and the capital city of Ireland. The history of Dublin goes back over more than 1000 years, making it one of the oldest main cities in Europe. It is a city full of history with many monuments and buildings from every era to view in amazement. Magnificent facades in Georgian and Victorian Style dominate the city still today. The river Liffey, flows through the middle of the city surrounded by picturesque walkways. Dublin is a lazy city, and the people are very open and communicative. The city is known for the warmth and hospitality of the people, that almost always find time for a chat – in the park, in the bus, whilst shopping, in the pub... actually everywhere. Of course the best place to strike up a conversation is in an Irish Pub. The Irish Pubs are like a National Institution.

The pubs have an important social function - they provide an open loungeroom in which friends can meet each other to talk about different types of beer, to tell each other stories, and to listen to many different types of music. Dublin is a very young city with a young, lively atmosphere. Almost 50% of the inhabitants are under 20 years of age, and as a result the city is orientated towards young people. The city is very close to the ocean, and very close to mountains which allows a great variety of leisure time activities. Dublin is also a good home base for excursions to discover the rest of Ireland. Ireland is rather a small island, only 486 km long and 275 km wide - with 5 million inhabitants. The country is a paradise for individual tourists with many treasures to discover. The wonderful colors of this island are famous, the lakes and rivers are amongst the cleanest in Europe. Due to the geographical location of Ireland, the weather is very changeable, and in summer the temperature varies between 14 and 18 degrees. Whether you are staying in Dublin yourself, or just travelling through, you can always make contact with the locals. You get used to the Irish accent in no time, it is easy to understand even though it is rather different to the English, English (Oxford English).
