Calgary

Calgary lies in the Province of Alberta at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Until the oil boom in the 60's and 70's, it was not much more than a farming region for cattle. Since then it has developed rapidly into the most wealthy region in Canada. This has the advantage that no local tax is levied, making the price of goods somewhat cheaper than elsewhere in Canada.
Calgary has over one million inhabitants. The infrastructure is that of a metropolis, whilst the hospitality is that of a small town. The people are very open and enjoy a chat, whilst the bankers and businessmen are now wearing designer suits with their cowboy boots.
The city center is small enough to allow you to find your way around rather quickly, and can be discovered on foot, or with local transportation. The 191 meter high Calgary Tower offers a fantastic view over the city and the Bow River, the view even stretches to the Rocky Mountains.
Calgary is also known as being the 'Sunshine City', because it is the city that receives the most sunshine in Canada.
The locals are very proud of 'the most famous Rodeo Show in the World', the 'Calgary Stampede', which attracts many visitors in July. Apart from the great parades, agricultural competitions, pancake breakfasts, and an annual market, at the Rodeo Show you will witness the throwing of lassos, get to ride a buffalo and see wagen races.
