Montreal

Montreal

Montreal is the second biggest city in the world, after Paris, that speaks French. It has approx. 3.7 million inhabitants. About 70 % of the people speak French as their mother tongue, while most people speak English and French fluently.
It was founded in 1642 by French settlers, and has managed to maintain its original character.
Montreal has a modern city center, and a charming historical 'old city' on the banks of the St. Lorenz River. It has a lovely promenade, cobble stone streets, typical french architecture and many inviting cafes and restaurants. Inbetween the Mont Royal Park, (a green oasis, ideal to relax in), and the 'old city', sky scrapers drap the city skyline. The city center and the 'old city' can be explored on foot, or with the Métro or with the Bus.
Montreals French Canadian charm is mirrored in its art and culture scene, and its hectic nightlife offers something for everyone. The 'Underground', provides an ideal network between businesses and shops, allowing shopping fans to shop under all weather conditions, for over 30km. Don't miss the Platform of the World Exhibition from 1967, the amusement park 'La Ronde', The Olympic Stadium built in 1976, the Casino, the Montreal Botanical Gardens built in 1931, and 'The Allouettes' - the Canadian Football League, and the many museums and art galleries. The main attractions in the summer months include the Jazz Festival and the Formel 1 Grand Prix. In August and September the "Montreal World Film Festival" takes place, and in October Montreal celebrates "Pop Montreal".
In addition the mountains and rivers in the nearby surroundings, are ideal for a days outing.
